Spyware is software or hardware installed on a computer without your knowledge which gathers information about you for later retrieval by whomever controls the spyware. There are different types of spyware. Surveillance spyware and advertising spyware. Surveillance spyware can includes key loggers, screen capture devices, and trojans. This is commonly used by hackers, suspicious spouses, law enforcement, etc.
Advertising spyware is is software that is installed alongside other software or through websites without your knowledge, or without full disclosure that it will be used for gathering personal information. Advertising spyware logs information about you, possibly including passwords, email addresses, web browsing history, online buying habits, and anything else it can find.
